November 5, 2026
Last December, the last lights over the Cape Fear River came on December 27. Wilmington's riverfront drone show was still flying that Saturday at 7:30 p.m., two days after Christmas. This year the city's Holidays on Water listing has three Saturdays, December 5, 12 and 19, each at 7:00 p.m. Nothing is scheduled after that.
With the last show on December 19, the season on the water spans four weekends, starting at Thanksgiving. Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and downtown Wilmington all hold their signature events on the water inside that window, and on three of those weekends two events land on the same evening.
Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year. That moves the North Carolina Holiday Flotilla at Wrightsville Beach one calendar day earlier than in 2025, when the kickoff was November 28 and the parade November 29. The format and the parade's 6 p.m. Saturday start stay the same. The 2026 schedule on the organizer's site:
Vendor applications for 2026 are already listed as sold out. The 2026 boat entry form caps the parade at 40 boats, accepted in the order received, with a nonrefundable $50 fee that is waived for entries affiliated with a flotilla sponsor. The form also gives the route. Boats stage on the Intracoastal Waterway north of the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge, head south on the ICW, turn east through Motts Channel, and then run along Banks Channel to the Coast Guard Station. The judges' stand is at Atlantic Marine Marina. Last year Port City Daily pointed spectators to Wrightsville Beach Park and Banks Channel, warned of heavy traffic, and suggested arriving early for parking.
The first overlap of the season comes that Friday. Carolina Beach's Lighting at the Lake is also on November 27, at the lake at Atlanta Avenue and Lake Park Boulevard. The Island of Lights committee lists a 6:30 p.m. start. The visitors bureau's event listing still shows the 2026 times as to be determined, but says festivities begin at 6:00 p.m. and the lighting usually happens around 7:00 p.m. That puts it in the same hour as the Wrightsville kickoff party.
Carolina Beach takes Friday. The Town of Carolina Beach runs its Christmas Parade at 7:00 p.m. on December 4, usually wrapping by 9:00 p.m. The route starts at Atlanta Avenue and goes down Lake Park Boulevard to Federal Point Shopping Center. The parade has been a town event since 2023, when Carolina Beach took it over from the Island of Lights committee.
Saturday, December 5, puts the Island of Lights flotilla and Wilmington's first drone show one hour apart.
The Island of Lights Holiday Tour of Homes runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on December 12. Tickets are $12, and the homes are spread across Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and nearby Wilmington. The committee says tickets are sold at Pleasure Island businesses. Wilmington's second drone show goes up at 7:00 p.m. that same evening, which means a tour that runs to its 8:30 close and a riverfront show compete for the same hour.
The third drone show is the only event on this list that has its evening to itself. It is also the last scheduled event on the water this season.
Several of the date changes come from where Thanksgiving falls, not from any decision by an organizer. The changes that matter are in Wilmington's drone series.
| Event | 2025 | 2026 | What actually changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| NC Holiday Flotilla parade | Sat., Nov. 29, 6 p.m. | Sat., Nov. 28, 6 p.m. | Calendar only. Same Saturday after Thanksgiving, same start time |
| Lighting at the Lake | Fri., Nov. 28, 6:30 p.m. | Fri., Nov. 27 | Calendar only |
| Island of Lights flotilla | Sat., Dec. 6, 6 p.m. | Sat., Dec. 5, 6 p.m. | Calendar only |
| Tour of Homes | Sat., Dec. 13 | Sat., Dec. 12, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. | Calendar only |
| Holidays on Water drone shows | Four Saturdays scheduled, Dec. 6 to 27, 7:30 p.m. | Three Saturdays, Dec. 5 to 19, 7:00 p.m. | One fewer date, 30 minutes earlier, ends 8 days sooner |
The drone show is the same size as before. The city's listing calls for 150 drones, the count WECT reported for 2025. What changed is the schedule around it. The series now ends the Saturday before Christmas instead of the Saturday after.
On December 5, the Island of Lights Christmas Flotilla starts at 6:00 p.m. Lighted boats run from Snow's Cut to the Carolina Beach Boat Basin and back while judges pick winners and spectators text in votes for a People's Choice award. In 2025, Port City Daily named the Carolina Beach Yacht Basin at 401 Marina St. as a place to watch. One hour after the flotilla starts, the first drone show goes up over the river downtown.
The same two events were scheduled for the same Saturday last year. The Island of Lights flotilla and the opening drone show were both set for December 6, 2025, and WECT reported that the drone show was canceled for weather. The series picked up again the next Saturday, December 13, and still had two dates after that.
The 2026 schedule has less room for a repeat. With three shows instead of four, a lost opening night would leave December 12 and 19. The December 12 show shares its evening with the Tour of Homes, so December 19 becomes the only drone night with nothing else on the calendar.
So the December 5 choice carries more weight this year. The flotilla happens once. The drone show is on the calendar for two more Saturdays, but the city's listing shows no date past December 19 to absorb a cancellation.
Each show flies over the Wilmington Riverwalk along Water Street between Dock and Grace streets. Santa is near the Visitor Information Booth from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. each of the three Saturdays, and the show is free. The visitors bureau's 2025 guide recommended the stretch of Riverwalk across from the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA and placed the visitor booth at Water and Market streets.
For parking, the City of Wilmington says the Market Street and 2nd Street decks charge $5 on Saturdays through December 26, with the first hour free. All three show dates fall inside that window.
There is also a new place to eat before the show this year. Opa by Giorgios, a coastal Greek and Mediterranean restaurant, held its soft opening October 28 at 14 Harnett St. on the Cape Fear River downtown, StarNews reported.
The organizers' pages are the final word on times and places, and the visitors bureau's NC Holiday Flotilla listing says more details will be available closer to the event. Our earlier look at the Cape Fear coast's fall calendar covers the months leading up to these weekends, and our North Carolina Coast page covers the beach towns more broadly.
Holiday weekends on the water are also when many coastal owners first picture their own deck or dock strung with lights.
